CSREA invites Brown University graduate students conducting research on and writing in areas related to the study of race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity in the United States, or U.S.-related transnational contexts to apply for a CSREA Graduate Student Research Grant.

CSREA Graduate Student Research Grant Application (AY 2025–26)

Brown University's Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA) is a leading voice in exploring and researching complex social and cultural issues related to educational, economic, and political resources, as well as the dynamics of power within society. It brings together scholars and practitioners at the forefront of addressing the most pressing questions about race, ethnicity, and their intersections with other social factors.

CSREA’s mission is to:

  • Build collaborative networks among scholars and students working on race and ethnicity
  • Engage in generative public conversations on pivotal issues
  • Enhance public knowledge about racial and ethnic disparities, discrimination, and well-being
  • Support efforts toward a fair and more just multiracial and multiethnic democracy and equitable society

The Center invites all Brown University graduate students conducting research and writing in areas related to race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity in the United States and the Americas and/or related comparative transnational contexts to apply for a CSREA Graduate Student Research Grant.

Grant Details

  • Maximum Award: $1,000
  • Purpose: To support dissertation research or other major scholarly projects related to race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity

Awardees will be required to submit a 1–2 page report on their research outcomes and may be invited to present their findings to the broader Brown community during the Fall semester following the grant period.

Eligibility & Application Process

The CSREA Graduate Student Research Grant supports Brown University doctoral and master’s students conducting research for a dissertation or major project in the fields of race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity in the United States and the Americas and/or related comparative transnational contexts. Graduate students from all disciplines at Brown are eligible to apply. Awardees must be in good academic standing as determined by their department.

Eligible Expenses

Grant funds may be used for the following:

  • Research travel (in accordance with Brown University’s domestic and international travel guidelines)
  • Supplies and/or software
  • Other justified research expenses

Funds may not be used for the purchase of hardware or equipment (e.g., computers, laptops, phones).

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Completed application form
  • Cover letter detailing research objectives, how the grant will support the project, and relevant academic or work experiences related to the research
  • Project description (200–300 words)
  • Budget proposal

Proposals will be evaluated based on quality, feasibility, and contribution to the field of race and ethnicity studies.

DEADLINE

The deadline for the grant cycle is Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Funds must be used between July 1, 2025, and June 1, 2026.
