Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America

About

CSREA fosters collaborations that deepen our understanding of how racial and ethnic dynamics shape society, influence individual well-being, and impact communities. Our work aims to illuminate the complex relationships among race, identity, and justice, promoting a more equitable and inclusive future for all.

Mission

The Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America at Brown University supports and generates rigorous and accessible research, performance, art, and scholarship on a broad range of pressing issues related to race and ethnicity to help build greater understanding and a more just world.

At CSREA we aim to:

  • build community among scholars and students working on race + ethnicity
  • develop new and enhance existing research networks
  • foster generative public conversations on pivotal issues
  • enhance public knowledge about racial and ethnic discrimination
  • contribute to national and community efforts to create a more just society

History

The Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America was established in 1986 as one of the nation's earliest academic centers dedicated to research, scholarship, and academic exchanges on issues of race and ethnicity. In 1996, it became the home of the newly established concentration in Ethnic Studies. Ethnic Studies, now well-established, is administered by the Department of American Studies.
