Fellowship Overview
Brown University's Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA) is a leading voice in exploring and researching complex social and cultural issues related to educational, economic, and political resources, as well as the dynamics of power within society. It brings together scholars and practitioners at the forefront of addressing the most pressing questions about race, ethnicity, and their intersections with other social factors.
The Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA) at Brown University invites applications for its Visiting Faculty Fellowship for the Fall 2025 semester. This in-person fellowship is designed for tenured and other long-term faculty who have been approved by their home institutions to be on a funded scholarly leave/sabbatical and whose work critically engages with race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity in the United States and/or transnational contexts.
CSREA’s Visiting Faculty Fellowship fosters interdisciplinary intellectual exchange, offering fellows access to Brown University’s academic resources and opportunities to share their research with the broader scholarly community. Fellows are expected to contribute to CSREA’s mission to:
- Build collaborative networks among scholars and students working on race and ethnicity
- Engage in generative public conversations on pivotal issues
- Enhance public knowledge about racial and ethnic disparities, discrimination, and well-being
- Support efforts toward a fair and more just multiracial and multiethnic democracy and equitable society
Fellows will be fully integrated into the intellectual life of CSREA, engaging with Brown faculty, students, and affiliated scholars while working on their research projects.
Fellowship Structure & Expectations
- Residency Requirement: This is an in-person, semester-long fellowship based at CSREA in Providence, RI.
- Research & Scholarship: Fellows will pursue individual research projects related to race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity while engaging with the Brown scholarly community.
- Community Participation: Fellows will participate in CSREA’s Research Fellows Seminar (number of sessions TBD) and are encouraged to attend CSREA-sponsored lectures, symposia, and events.
Fellows are responsible for covering their own housing, travel, and living expenses (including health benefits) for the duration of the fellowship.
Fellowship Benefits
- $8,000 taxable stipend for the Fall 2025 semester

- Participation in the CSREA Research Fellows Seminar
- Opportunities to present works-in-progress and engage with Brown faculty and students
- Inclusion in CSREA’s academic and social community
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be a member of the regular faculty at their home institution
- Be on a funded scholarly leave or sabbatical during the fellowship period
- Have a research focus on race, ethnicity, and/or indigeneity in the U.S., the Americas, or related transnational contexts
Application Process
To apply, candidates must submit the following materials:
- A current CV
- A research proposal (2-3 pages) detailing:
- The focus of their project and its relevance to CSREA’s mission
- Expected outcomes and contributions to the field
- How the fellowship will support their work
- A statement of intent (1-2 pages) describing:
- How they will engage with CSREA’s intellectual community
- Their interest in participating in the CSREA Research Fellows Seminar
- A sample of scholarly or creative work (maximum 25 pages)
- A letter from their home institution confirming approval of a funded scholarly leave/sabbatical for Fall 2025
Deadline
Applications for the Fall 2025 academic term are due on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
The first convening of the selected cohort of fellows will be in September 2025.
